     Growing up with psychic or mediumship abilities is not glamorous as one might see on television or read in books. Seeing or hearing spirits, sensing/being affected by others' emotions, and a vast array of other experiences can be frightening to a child.  These experiences can also be framed by mainstream mental health providers as psychotic or a number of other garden variety mental health disorders.  Psychic or mediumship skills are frequently stigmatized by other children and adults who have not had experiences or exposure to psychic/mediumship information other than what they see on TV or heard from friends, family, and church leaders.    

     Cultivating psychic/mediumship skills occurs in a number of ways and based on the age and need of the individual.  Psychic children usually do not grow up with psychic parents/family, the ones that do are a small minority. Low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and "feeling different" are frequently experienced by psychic children.  Psychic children grow up to be psychic adults whose psychic/mediumship skills may be interfering with vocational, education, relationship success.  Psychotherapy with a clinician familiar with how psychic/mediumship abilities affect cognitive and emotional functioning throughout the lifespan is an effective intervention bridging psychological interventions with cultivating/learning psychic/mediumship skills and management.
